Diverted Neutral Current Demonstration - Normal, Open CNE, Current Circulation (Part 2)
A demonstration of diverted neutral current using a 12V AC test rig. This represents two adjacent properties with TN-C-S supplies via a CNE (combined neutral and earth) cable and a shared extraneous conductive part.
Demonstration includes:
► normal operation
► current sharing between the CNE and bonding conductors
► what happens with an open CNE in one property and not in the adjacent one
► the situation with more than two properties all connected to the same extraneous part.
In all cases, current can be found in the bonding conductors connected to shared metallic parts such as gas or water pipes.
Note that this demonstration uses a custom manufactured test rig which runs on an isolated 12 volt AC supply. Some of the items shown would be dangerous if done with 230V or a real electrical installation.

    Im wondering which direction you would go away from the original earth stake. If i had a new overhead pole put in for my new supply (I'm very out in the sticks) would I be advised to head towards the pole which happens to be in the same direction of an overhead transformer for me and a neighbour on the next farm. The new supply is PME but the estimator guy said to put an earth stake in with a 25mm CPC connection to it. Never had that request before in my youger days of new house etc.

    Every house i wired, always drove earth rods. 3 core going out to the cutout, and youd be connected into the earth block, which is basically the neutral block there. Theres an inspection box for the earth rod, which is normally placed under the meter cabinet externally.

    If you are in a shower area my existing pull cord switches a fan, Light and shower pump from the same switch. Is a special load carry switch necessary if you fitted juts outside shower room door? Will they carry the load? Should a relay be employed though; it still has to take a load ...so i am confused? yes your videos are a carming releaf from a importand but dry subject...thanks.

    Afternoon JW. Just purchased a 4 year old new build. It has an EV charger installed using 2.5mm T&A, with a 25A MCB on the consumer unit. Charger has been capped to 25A using dip switches inside the unit. When I plug my car in, as expected it’s capped at 25A which is fast enough for me. Is this OK or should I be expecting a house fire? 😅

    • @jwflame
      @jwflame 8 днів тому

      May be acceptable, if the cable is either surface clipped or direct in the plaster/masonry. Not acceptable if it's in any kind of conduit or ducting, or passes through insulation. Even if it is surface clipped, it will get fairly warm in use, as it will be used pretty much at it's maximum rating.

    • @SPDTDL
      @SPDTDL 7 днів тому

      @@jwflame Thank you JW. I managed to find out it’s 'clipped direct'. However, below the consumer unit is a switch that enables me to turn the EV charger on and off. 20A Double Pole switch. I assume this would not be a good thing having 25A passed through it?

  • @craiginboro679
    @craiginboro679 13 днів тому

    The lighting circuit isn't RADIAL, they used to be. The lighting circuit is a Ring, you actually drew a ring circuit, ie the main conductor left the consumer unit and returned to it. A radial is where power is supplied to each device and doesn't have a return. Ps blue=black, brown=red. Unfortunately electricians use a red switch wire to connect to live. If they used a black switch wire to connect to the 'ring' live it would be obvious it was a switch wire. No extra bits of sheathing required.

    hi guys, i have a question. how does SPD protect your electrical appliances? when a high voltage occurs and SPD detects it, will your circuits be isolated?

    • @jwflame
      @jwflame 9 днів тому

      The SPD becomes a short circuit for the duration of the overvoltage, so the voltage is reduced and the energy ends up as heat in the SPD. Nothing is isolated.

    Thank you John for another very clearly presented topic. With a TT system in the main house would it only be beneficial to connect the 10mm 3core SWA cable (cpc) to the outbuilding (with water and gas services) consumer unit MET where it has its own separate earth rod. I would imagine this setup, rather than keeping the two completely separate as you presented, is beneficial in trying to keep the Ra to a minimum. Or is it a pointlessly small benefit since you are relying on RCD for earth fault protection? I hope that makes sense? Many thanks for my crazy brain working overtime.
